Virginia Cosmetology License Information
In order to obtain a license in Cosmetology, Barbering or Nail Technology in the state of Virginia, individuals must complete the requirements listed below. Other requirements may apply.
Cosmetologist: 1500 hours
Barber: 1500 hours
Nail Technologist: 150 hours

Reciprocity:
Reciprocity may be granted to individuals who have completed the same amount of hours as required by Virginia. Credit will be given to those who have worked in the field for a minimum of six months. Upon proper application to the Board, any individual currently licensed to practice as a barber, cosmetologist, or nail technician in any other state or jurisdiction of the United States, and who has completed a training program and has taken a written examination and practical examination that is substantially equal to that required by Virginia may be issued a barber or cosmetology license, respectively, without an examination.
