North Carolina Cosmetology License Information
In order to obtain a license in Barbering, Cosmetology, Esthetics, and Nail Technology in the state of North Carolina, individuals must complete the requirements listed below. Other requirements may apply.
Cosmetology: 1500 hours
Esthetician: 600 hours
Nail Technology: 300 hours
Barber: 1528 hours
Continuing Education Requirements:
Required to renew licenses at the rate of eight (8) hours per year for a total of 24 hours before the three-year license expires. Exemption: All Cosmetologists with 20 years of consecutive licensure are exempt from the continuing education requirement during the renewal period following the 20 year anniversary of licensure.
Reciprocity:
If an individual currently holds a cosmetologist, manicurist, esthetician, and/or teacher license in another state he/she may be eligible for a North Carolina license if the following are met:
Individuals must hold a current license in the United States; Individuals must have taken state board-approved or National examination to obtain licensure; Individuals must be in good standing with no disciplinary action against their license.
To apply, individuals will need to contact the state board in which they are licensed and ask them to mail a letter of certification to: NC State Board of Cosmetic Art, 1201 Front Street, Suite 110, Raleigh, NC 27609. The letter must include the following information:
Name of licensee
Current address of licensee
Social Security Number
Expiration date of license
Sanctions or other disciplinary actions
Verification of a passed state board approved or national examination
